13th Lodz East Asia Meeting “Power Shifts in East Asia: Prospects for Developing Asian-European Ties”

 

The 13th annual Lodz East Asia Meeting took place at the Faculty of International and Political Studies on 1-2 June 2017. The conference was devoted to the examination of power shifts in the political, economic and social landscape of the Asian continent, as well as their significance for Asian-European exchange. The keynote speech was delivered by Emil J. Kirchner, Jean Monnet Professor and Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Essex. In his lecture Professor Kirchner examined interest convergence  and security cooperation between the European Union and China. The keynote speech was followed by a special session on Asia-Europe economic and political linkages, chaired by Professor Kirchner.

 

 

At the end of the first day of the conference the participants were invited to a banquet in Przerwa Restaurant, located in a renovated textile factory. The sessions during the conference focused on analyzing EU-Asian relations (China’s Relations with Central and Eastern European Countries; Cooperation between Regions in China and Europe; Linking China with Europe: One Belt, One Road Initiative), foreign policies of East Asian countries (South China Sea Territorial Dispute and Maritime Security in Asia; Norms, Identities, and Strategies of the People’s Republic of China; Changes in Foreign and Security Policy of Japan; US-China Relations under the Trump Administration; International Relations in South Asia and Middle East), as well as domestic problems in the states of the region (International and Domestic Problems in Northeast Asia; Social, Political, and Economic Issues in China and Japan; Economic, Social, and Political Problems in Japan; Political and Economic Developments in Southeast and South Asia).

 

 

In total, 60 presenters from 12 countries (23 presenters from Poland and 37 from abroad) participated in the 13th Lodz East Asia Meeting. The conference was attended by HE Vu Dang Dung, Ambassador of Vietnam.
